- Anne Hutchinson: Criticized the church and its authority which made John Winthrop unhappy. So, when he become governor Winthrop pressed charges saying faith was only necessary for salvation. Hutchinson disagreed and was banished from the colony. Left the colony and moved to the Rhode Island Colony with her family and sixty followers.
- Roger Williams: Believed in the freedom of religion and need for separation of Church and State which caused him to be banished from the colony. Was to leave for England but fled into the wilderness and lived with some Native Americans.

- Colonist started off as trying to have decent relationships with the Native Americans but through frictions over cultural differences, the Pequot War started which then led to the start to King Philip's War.
- Pequot War (1636-1638): An armed conflict between the Pequot tribe and the English colonists of Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, and their Native American allies. Pequots lost the war where 700 of them were killed or taken captive. Those taken captive were sold into slavery while survivors dispersed.
- King Philips War (1675-1678): Also known as the First Indian War or Metacom's Rebellion. An armed conflict between Native Americans in New England and English colonists with Native American allies. Named after main leader of the Native American side, Metacomet, which translates into english as "King Philip". War went on until a treaty was signed in April 1678. Considered one of the deadliest wars in American history. In one year, 12 towns were destroyed and others badly damaged. The colony's economy was ruined while the population lowered.
